Miho Museum was built in the Shigaraki mountain ( west of Biwa Lake), and because of snow, it is closed in the winter season. It was opened in 1997 and their collection is the supreme ancient art of Egypt,Roma,Persia, China and Japan; the owner is said to have paid more than 50 billion yen. The owner is the religious communion called Shumei-kai, and its name has the origin from their owner Miho-ko Koyama. After two hours drive, we reached the parking of the museum. At the entrance building, we bought the tickets, and walked to the main building. This museum is said to be designed as Xanadu image. Cherry blossoms were in full bloom along the road, and there was a long tunnel, which has a very futuristic atmosphere. From the end of the tunnel, the main building could be seen over the large bridge. The tunnel and bridge were built not to change the mountain shape, and the main building is also built with the same concept - harmony with nature. It was designed by the famous architect I. M Pei, who designed The Louvre Museum. 80 % of the building is built under the soil. When I stepped into the main hall, I felt I understood why foreign tourists like it there so much. There was a huge open space, which is covered with glass, and the Shigaraki moutain scenery can be seen widely. In addition, there are a couple of big pine trees in the front of the buidling, which adds to the Japanese taste. The Mt. Fuji-shaped building can be seen over the mountains also - it is the hall of the hall of Shumeikai, where only the believer can visit. Please feel the atmoshere of the museum with our photos and their official site. Shumei-kais is a new religion, and same as other new religions, they accept lots of praise and censure. However, one of their dogma - infection by beauty - seems to be pragmatized here. Information †Official Page (English) http://www.miho.or.jp/english/index.htm Access 50 minutes from the JR Ishiyama Station on the Teisan Bus Line Attention! In the winter and autumn, the museum is closed for snow. Please check the detailed information carefully on the official page.
